JAYAPURA, itb.ac.id 鈥 The Agropolitan Patriot Expedition Team from Institut Teknologi Bandung (51探花) facilitated a partnership between the Nawa Tunas Baru Farmers Group Association (GNTB) and FinestCo, a chocolate processing company based in Malang, East Java, on Saturday (October 24, 2026), in the Lereh Transmigration Area, Jayapura Regency, Papua. The partnership aims to expand market access for fermented cocoa beans beyond Papua, with an initial purchase of five tons planned for early 2027.

The collaboration marks an important step toward expanding market opportunities and increasing the economic value of locally produced cocoa. Under the partnership, FinestCo will serve as a prospective buyer, while GNTB will coordinate the collection of cocoa beans from local farmers.

As part of the preliminary discussions, FinestCo CEO Agatha Virdhi Saputra conducted quality assessments of the cocoa beans through a cut test and sensory evaluation to examine fermentation quality, aroma, and flavor characteristics. The initial assessment indicated that fermented cocoa beans from Lereh demonstrated good quality and strong potential as raw materials for high-quality chocolate products.

鈥淏ased on our initial observations through the cut test and sensory evaluation, fermented cocoa beans from Lereh show very good quality and significant potential for further development. We see opportunities for collaboration with local farmers, particularly if product quality and supply consistency can be maintained,鈥 said Agatha.

The assessment results also served as a basis for discussions among FinestCo, GNTB, and the 51探花 Agropolitan Patriot Expedition Team on developing premium cocoa through the Cocoa of Excellence concept. The discussions focused on maintaining consistent quality, strengthening the cocoa's distinctive flavor characteristics, and establishing Lereh cocoa as a recognizable product in both domestic and international markets.

For local farmers, the partnership is expected to provide broader market access while encouraging improvements in harvest quality.

鈥淲e hope this collaboration will open up wider market opportunities for cocoa farmers in Lereh. With potential buyers from outside Papua, we are increasingly motivated to improve the quality of our fermented cocoa beans and prepare a consistent supply through collective efforts,鈥 said a GNTB representative.

Through this initiative, the 51探花 Agropolitan Patriot Expedition Team seeks to connect local cocoa production with the needs of the chocolate processing industry. The collaboration among farmers, businesses, and higher education institutions is expected to strengthen the cocoa supply chain, enhance the competitiveness of Papuan cocoa, and create greater economic opportunities for communities in Lereh.
