Through the implementation of this program, students gained a better understanding of different types of waste, proper waste segregation practices, and the impacts of waste on the marine environment. In addition, the initiative helped foster awareness of the importance of managing waste at its source. The availability of supporting facilities such as waste banks and composters at the school is expected to strengthen the long-term adoption of these waste management practices.
The Project Leader, Dayu Wiyati Purnaningtyas, stated that the issue of marine litter cannot be addressed solely by removing waste that has already entered the ocean, but must begin with preventive measures at the source.
鈥淭he issue of marine litter cannot be solved solely by cleaning up waste that has already entered the ocean. Instead, it must start with preventive measures at the source. This effort requires the contribution and collaboration of various stakeholders, including educational institutions, communities, and government agencies. Through MISI LAUT, we aim to instill the understanding that protecting the ocean does not necessarily begin at sea, but can start with simple daily habits, one of which is sorting waste at its source,鈥 she said.
She also expressed her hope that the students would become agents of change, bringing these positive habits into their families and school communities.
鈥淲e hope that the students will grow into agents of change who bring these positive habits to their families and school communities. We also hope that the spirit of 鈥楽tarting with One Piece of Waste We Sort鈥 does not end with this program alone, but continues to inspire concrete actions in everyday life,鈥 she added.
Through this community service initiative, 51探花 continues to contribute to addressing environmental challenges through education, community capacity building, and collaboration with various stakeholders. These efforts are expected to support the sustainable reduction of waste leakage into coastal and marine environments.
